Vortice Dance Company, at JTI Encounters

JTI announces the fourteenth edition of the JTI Encounters. The Portuguese dance company Vortice shall participate to this year’s Encounters, by presenting two different shows: DRACULA and SOLILOQUY.

The events shall take place on September 16 and 19, at 19:00 hours, on the stage of the Bucharest National Opera.

The first edition of the JTI Encounters has been initiated in 2000 by the prestigious ballet company Bejart Ballet Lausanne, followed by Nacho Duato and Compania Nacional De Danza, Cullberg Ballet, Joaquin Cortes, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Tango Pasion, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant, Gigi Caciuleanu and the Chile National Ballet, Alonzo King Lines Ballet from San Francisco.

Vortice Dance Company was established in 2001 by the choreographers Cláudia Martins and Rafael Carriço. Graduates of the Escola Superior de Dança in stage performance and scholars within the „Erasmus” program at the Hoggenschool Dansacademie Tilburg in the Netherlands, the two artists have developed their activity in the contemporary dance sector. Along the years, the Vortice Dance Company has become one of the most prestigious ballet groups in Portugal, with numerous international prizes. Vortice’s activity has be acknowledged by the public and by the critics in Japan, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Brazil, Latvia, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Macedonia, USA. Among the distinctions we would like to mention the Public’s Prize in 2002, at the fourth edition of the Ballet and Modern Dance Contest, handed by His Highness Prince Takamado and Maia Plisetskaya or the Premier Prix Professionnel won at the Printemps de la Danse contest in Switzerland in 2001.

For DRACULA, the first show presented, the two choreographers have used several inspiration sources, from the famous book signed by Bram Stoker to legends and myths of various cultures. „We are all, both women and men, made of flesh and blood, involved in domination and obedience games. The substance we are made of represents our nature and also our greatest weakness. And, under the influence of weakness, we often yield to temptation much too easily…”, stated Cláudia Martins and Rafael Carriço.

SOLILOQUY – About Wonderland is a whole different show in nature and presentation. As the two artists state, “SOLILOQUY speaks of situations in our day-to-day lives, in which we all react in an intuitive and similar manner… The inevitable death, solitude, feelings, all these would not become fatal if we knew how to simply listen…”.

The event JTI Encounters takes place since 2007 as a part of the George Enescu Festival, organized also this year by the Art Production Foundation.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the JTI Encounters!
